as opposed to what? I read an article about the Germans and Brits working in Helmand province. they go in and are greeted with cheers. same villagers cheering a week later are shooting at them. it's a tribal shithole over there. and consider the fact that the Russians who are tough as nails and completely ruthless were unable to subdue the populace.
the best scenario is that we somehow prop up someone strong enough to keep shit in check and haul ass. and if that means paying off some primitive to shoot at the enemy (whoever that may be) then why the fuck not?

the cost/effectiveness is relatively stratospheric.
same thing was done in iraq and worked VERY effectively to slash american casulties.
if you had a sibling or kin in afghanistan, would you still be complaining of the minuscule cost that might save their life.

And under that rubric the belief is that you can pay them to join your side because their motivation is purely mercenary in the first place.
The argument sounds good.
I think it is a massively dumb idea. Not because I think that there are not people who might be accurately described as the above argument goes but, because I am pretty sure that real Taliban will use it as an opportunity to infiltrate.

political semantics aside, they are not being paid to 'join our side', they are being paid to not shoot at out side. there is a difference.

Another problem of paying them -- how does the US keep track of where the money goes? They (the fighters) could simply take the US payout and use it to get more weaponry etc. -

the program isn't for the hard core taliban, it's for the 'fighters' who have no other means to support their families and would like nothing better than to NOT get shoot at with the worlds most advanced weaponry in that endeavor. -

that may be true but it doesn't mean that some of them don't simply funnel the money back to their Taliban friends

If the survival fighters could be weeded out and turned against the true Taliban, it could work. But that's a tough call. It didn't get us far in Viet Nam.

Maybe if we pulled ALL of our troops out, and just paid the Taliban to shoot at each other. Our guys don't get killed, and their guys do. Sounds like a win-win to me.
This is really the first time you've found a reason to bitch about the waste of our tax dollars?
