Time Magazine hits it on the head
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 5:20 PM
"There is a growing perception that the Administration's policies have been thwarted across the board: Afghanistan is a mess, Iran seems ready to scuttle the nuclear negotiations, there's no progress in the Middle East, the Syrians and North Koreans remain recalcitrant, the Russians have been offered a freebie on missile defense, and the Chinese have been given a pass on human rights with no apparent quid pro quos."

not delivering at home. not delivering on the world stage. but according to the Norwegians that voted on the Nobel Peace Prize, it's the thought that counts. -

can we set aside accomplishment and experience and slap down a vote based solely upon emotional appeal? yes we can.

to deny one penny of military aid would be political suicide for just about any member of either party. -

$$$ and religion. big money donors have politicians by the balls. and bible thumpers don't want the holy land to be put in the hands of muslims.

It is as it should be.
US support of Israel is an example of politicians paying attention to the voters.
The reason: Voters and money.
The US is jam packed with lots of people who feel a deep and abiding interest in the welfare of Israel.
And so long as this is so, then the politicians will be doing the right thing to listen to them.
After all we do want our reps to represent our interests right?
The welfare of Israel is high on the priority list for oodles of American citizens.
Looked at that way it all makes perfect sense. It is as it should be.
It's too damn bad they won't also pay as much attention to a hell of a lot of other things that oodles of voters have high in their priority lists.

Re: Is Israel too strong for Barack Obama?
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 1:17 PMI think that Israel serves as an important part of US foreign policy in the region
the cold war years israel was seen as a bulwark against the Soviet Union, today it's more the threat of Islamic extremism and nuclear weapons (Iran et al)

Re: Is Israel too strong for Barack Obama?
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 6:04 PMThat doesn't explain why they can simply deny all demands from our government, or why every possible candidate needs to grovel before AIPEC -

Re: Is Israel too strong for Barack Obama?
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 6:40 PMI don't think AIPAC is any more influential than any oil producing Middle Eastern state.
I've yet to see anyone prove that AIPAC has undue influence over US policy in the form of actual legislation.

Re: Is Israel too strong for Barack Obama?
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 7:18 PMWhile I agree with your point about legislation, I can't think of any instance where assuaging the worries of the Middle Eastern Oil Sheiks was considered a requirement on the road to electoral victory -

absolutely. why is it essential for every single viable candidate to restate the obvious, that we are fully committed to the safety and support of Israel? and as I've stated before, we have a very spotty record when it comes to backing up our allies. with pretty much one exception being Israel.

by oodles you mean politically vocal and rich. sure.
but I'll bet the average joe is not as inclined to support policies that are going to result in some kid from their hometown being shot up. but that "average" joe isn't as jazzed up as the bible thumpers and isn't wealthy enough to pull the rug out from under a politician that doesn't play ball.
