Re: Is Swine Flu Really a Pandemic?
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 12:39 AMi think of swine flu, i think of sars.
it's good that they are keeping an eye on it and staying cautious.
it's way too overblown in the media. people just need to be smart about how they deal with their own personal hygiene and watch out for others awful hygiene.

Re: Is Swine Flu Really a Pandemic?
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 8:22 PMI think the term "pandemic" scares people when in actuality the definition isn't so scary
I'm a bit nervous about the H1N1 because 2 people from my office have had it.

ok. you're nervous.
does that excuse inflating the death toll? or not being frank with the fact that people only need one series to mount a strong immune response? which means something. and as bad as it was here, the news was a hundred times more sensationalistic overseas. the europeans thought we were keeling over in the streets. -

Re: Is Swine Flu Really a Pandemic?
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 8:34 PMI don't think the pandemic is about the death toll, but about the number of confirmed H1N1 cases (over 30,000 confirmed in June 09 -- WHO)
the media certainly does enough fear mongering. Well really the motto of the press is "if it bleeds, it leads" -- so no surprises there

how is this different from any flu season? -

apparently because it's a new virus and people have little to no immunity

Re: Is Swine Flu Really a Pandemic?

contradicted by the article I linked to in the Spiegel.
"Pandemic viruses are newly occurring pathogens. They're unknown to the human immune system, which is why people are so defenseless against them. Not one but two inoculation shots are generally necessary to provide sufficient defenses to an immune system that has no previous experience of a virus. Why, then, are current vaccination studies from around the world delivering results that seem far more fitting for a normal, seasonal flu?"

a phenomenon that epidemiologists are aware of. something that isn't being covered in our press for some reason. nothing nefarious. our sensationalistic media just doesn't care unless it titillates, scares or bleeds. -

Re: Is Swine Flu Really a Pandemic?
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 8:50 PMMaybe I'm wrong, time will tell. But I am going to treat this flu the same as I treat all the rest. Not worry about it one bit.
