"The world believes that the US is borrowing money from capital markets. It is often said that the Chinese and the Japanese will buy government bonds. But the truth of the matter is that trust in the gravitas and reliability of the United States has suffered to such a great degree that fewer and fewer foreigners are purchasing its government bonds. That's why the Federal Reserve is now buying securities that it has printed itself."

it's always a good idea to listen to the Germans.

Re: German Chancellor to Meet with the "Debt President"
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 10:01 AMThe United States helps others. Always has.
There are times that some think it's owed them because of the help France gave the US when we were just a revolutionary spark.
I should think Normandy would have put paid to that.

Re: German Chancellor to Meet with the "Debt President"
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 3:17 PMFrance doesn't think so:
There is a story about a conversation between General de Gaulle, who, as president of the French Republic, telephoned his American counterpart Lyndon B Johnson, to inform him that France had decided to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty alliance.
Since its foundation nearly two decades earlier, Nato had had its headquarters in France. Now Nato would have to move.
Furthermore, de Gaulle added, it was his intention that all American service personnel should be removed from French soil.
"Does that include," Johnson is said to have replied, "those buried in it?"

Fri, June 26, 2009 - 3:19 PMIn case you don;t feel like reading the whole article, here's my favorite part:
"Paris launched a series of events to mark the 60th anniversary of its own liberation in August 2004.
The city's mayor had given the celebrations the title Paris Se Libere! - Paris Liberates Herself!
One of the newspapers published a 48-page commemorative issue. There was no mention of the allies until page 18. " -

nationalist pride is great. and deserved in the face of anti-Americanism.
bashing France and Germany when they have attempted to talk some sense into the heads of our leaders is just about as productive as the Bush cronies insulting our allies when they tried to prevent us from getting bogged down in Iraq. but it seems to be a very American trait to ignore our friends in Europe as well as the Canadians, Australians and Japanese. especially when they are offering timely advice and constructive criticism. -

When did France ever give us constructive criticism? -

so. there may be a global sell off in the making. this was triggered in part by floated rumors of yet another stimulus package.
no one is talking about it right now. but they will be. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

I'm waiting for that magic moment when they hold a T-Bill auction and no one comes.
That will prove an interesting event.
What ya wanna bet that Drooling fools like Sear Leader and Monkey Bitch Pelosi won't "get it" but, will instead turn to the taxpayer to make up for what they see as a mere shortfall.

they have been known to provide good advice. Merkel's predecessor warned us not to invade Iraq. now Merkel is warning us not to spend ourselves into the kind of debt we can't ever dream to pay back. you can't expect the world to save us from ourselves.
