some huge qualifiers there. no military budget, hydropower and massive natural gas and oil reserves. kind of like Russia without the corruption or Venezuela without the corruption and incompetence.
and the index I believe is per capita. and as far as I know none of these countries border third world basket cases. so you don't have illiterate, unskilled immigrants artificially pulling down the score like you do in the US and the Netherlands. add the wave of unskilled immigrants on top of reunification with a former communist basket case and you have Germany. the fact that the Netherlands and the US are in the top 10 and Germany is in the top 15 is surprising.

sorry. It doesn't look like the Scandinavians are capable of correcting for political bias. kind of like what happened with the Nobel Peace Prize. -

yeah. the consequences of personal freedom aren't always great. socialism attempts to address uncertainty by imposing controls that push everyone toward some "stable" median. which I guess is good for the 50% below the median and shitty for those above it. but I understand why this would appeal to people with limited skills and no ambition. and the people at the very top will never really be affected so why should they care? -

good post. it makes sense geographically why Scandinavian countries would tend toward socialism. the weather alone forces some level of cooperation.
but there is a reason why immigrants (especially skilled ones) flock to the US and it isn't the weather. it has to do with a playing field that allows competition. something that plays itself out in how immigrants assimilate into society. -

Exactly. I remember the chapter on Sweden in P. J. O'Rourke's "Eat the Rich" goes into why socialism works so well there......and also why it doesn't. Hard to pick a favorite chapter of that book, but I would say it's between Cuba and Sweden. Here's a joke from that book, that P.J. says he heard many times while in Stockholm:
Q: What does Norway have that Sweden doesn't?
A: A good neighbor.

It's dated now, just like All the Trouble in the World, but they are both great if you haven't read them already....

I guess you have to experience what happens when a new government regulation takes effect. the interpretation of the regulation for instance. high performers are usually creative. which means creative solutions to problems. regulations interfere with the freedom of personal choice and so "solutions" end up being imposed on you.
you can see this easily demonstrated when you compare different industries. banking which is highly regulated to say high tech companies. or within industries. compare the approach and efficiency within R&D to manufacturing. of course, there is an ongoing encroachment into R&D which again will impose exogenous "solutions" to problems. which means that malaise and frustration will spread. and with that the satisfaction of being creative.
but the low performers that probably have never had an original thought in their lives won't notice. in fact it will probably be better watching people they once envied beaten down by the system. -
